Colin and Ken scour the globe for the men behind the history and they come up with some great ones. I've been to several of their presentations and they are excellent. There is no better way to learn history than to meet the men who lived it.At the event in September in addition to the main speaker, Colonel Bill Sefton, I got to meet Norm Nietzke of The Band of Brothers. Many of their speakers are WWII vets. These men are a national treasure and they aren't getting any younger. If you want to hear history firsthand make plans to attend.

Origin of this blog's name

This blog's name comes from a common phrase used by one of my favorite authors, Edward Abbey, usually in reference to somewhere (nowhere?) in the vast expanse of The Great American Southwest, my favorite place on Earth.

A great jumping off place for the Back of Beyond is (was?) Moab, Utah. I suspect "was" may be in order as the last time I was there was a bit over 15 years ago and I suspect our creeping monoculture may have caught up with it by now. (Though I see that Rim Cyclery is still around and there isn't a Starbucks, both good signs.)

My last trip to The Southwest was several years ago for a Rim-To-Rim hike thru The Canyon.

While I'm on the subject...if you are looking for books on The Southwest in general (including an occasional Abbey first edition) the best place to go is Five Quail Books. Excellent selection combined with excellent customer service. Many of the books on The Southwest in my library came from them. Highly recommended.
